Online Marketing: How to Legally Use Images Online & Avoid Copyright Restrictions
We're going to be talking about
what is okay and what is definitely not
okay when it comes to using images
online because we all like adding neat
little images to our social media or
adding images to our content pages
inside of our website, especially our
blog or using them on our email
marketing, but the question is do you own
the rights to use those photos because
if not, if you use a photo illegally then
you can get fined up to $1,500 per image
depending on who took that photo and
what their copyright and privacy, you
know, terms are. So you have to be really
careful when it comes to using images
online which is why I wanted to talk
about this today. We're gonna talk about
what's okay and what's not okay, so let's
start with what images you are allowed
to use. If you take your camera your
iPhone and you go out and you start
taking photos that means that you own
the rights to use those photos and you
can use them however you want. You can
add text on them, you can display them on
your website, in your social media
because you own the rights to those. If
you go to a website and buy a stock
photo some of the websites that I'm
using right now is I really like Adobe
Photo stock. Adobe Photo stock has some
awesome imagery. I'm really picky when it
comes to images. I don't like those
cheesy stock photos. Instead I like more
realistic looking photos that actually
feel like it's real life and that I took
maybe took it myself, and so I really
love Adobe photo stock because they just
have gorgeous images at a pretty good
price.
I think istockphoto.com is pretty pricey.
Shutterstock is another one but I find
that most of their images are just okay
and again I'm pretty picky about the
photos that I use. What is not okay to
use online and this is something that
might shock a couple of you but Google
Images. We all like going to Google
Images and checking out different images
and quote images and every
thing else but you do not have
permission to use those photos because
again you either want to have taken the
photo yourself or purchased the photo
and then you can guarantee you own the
rights to use that photo. But if you find
a beautiful-looking image on Google
images. don't use it. I'm warning you. If
you find a beautiful image on somebody
else's website, don't use it I'm warning
you. If you look on social media and you
found a beautiful picture of a landscape
image, don't use it. I'm warning you.
And you know I know it's tricky because
there are so many beautiful images out
there and nobody wants to have to buy
the rights to use an image, but it's
better to be safe than sorry, so I
definitely wanted to be sure to educate
you. And the last thing I want to share
with you is that on these websites that
you go to and buy stock photos and
especially if you get sucked into one of
those free stock photo websites, okay
there's no such thing as a free lunch. I
learned that in college in my econ class.
You know, free stock photo sites are very
tricky because you're gonna have to read
the terms for the images that you
download and many of the terms say that
you can download this image for personal
use but you're not allowed to use it for
commercial use and you cannot alter the
image in any way such as adding photo or
text on top of that photo and if you do
they're gonna be out to find you and
give you a fine for using that photo
incorrectly. So if you are trying to
pinch pennies and if you're on a budget
and want to try one of the free stock
photo sites, be sure that you are reading
their terms and conditions very very
very very carefully and they are full of
legal jargon, so just be careful and be
wise. I hope that you liked this video
